Reuniting the Swindale Beck with its Natural Floodplain
The RSPB Haweswater, In partnership with United Utilities, undertook a project to return the natural features to the Swindale Beck river by re-meandering a historically straightened portion of the river Swindle Beck. This straightened channel had been cut off from its natural floodplain by the build up of heavy rocks on the river banks. But the implementation of these land management practices will mitigate downstream flooding by reducing the speed the water flows through the valley whilst allowing flooded water in the valley to return to the river.
