Youth Conservation Network Coordinator
Dembo Jatta
I volunteer for the CWB Flight of The Osprey Project, where I help to mobilize young conservationists along the Flyway.
Youth participation is a vital component of a holistic conservation approach that fosters long-term conservation sustainability. This is critical because it creates the groundwork for future generations to continue the conservation efforts and legacy of previous generations.
Among the migratory bird species, ospreys hold a special place in my heart for a number of reasons. One reason is that they were one of the most easily observable migrating birds along the Gambia-Senegal border where I grew up, and seeing them brings back memories of my childhood. Two, their story is inspirational; While they are still far from being entirely protected, they serve as a sharp reminder of what our actions as humans can accomplish. Lastly, who doesn't enjoy watching ospreys showcase their outstanding fishing skills? It's a true privilege
to have witnessed this countless of times.
Blue LJ2 was ringed as a chick in Scotland in July 2018 and has since been sighted in kartong, The Gambia in October 2018 and February 2019. This photo of blue LJ2 and myself was taken in January 2020 during his third winter visit to Kartong. For me, this photo demonstrates the importance of international conservation efforts to prevent the loss of migratory bird species..
