Volunteer: Grant writer

Angelique de Kock

I volunteer as a Grant Writer for Conservation Without Borders. I help identify funding opportunities, write grant proposals, and support the team in securing the resources needed to power the expeditions, education programs, and conservation efforts around the world.

Why is this important?

We all want to contribute to something bigger than ourselves—to be part of positive change. For me, this is one way I can actively help. By securing funding, I’m supporting real, on-the-ground action to protect vulnerable species, inspire communities, and drive system changes that benefits both people and the planet.

What migratory species inspires me?

The Arctic tern. Although a relatively small bird, it migrates further than any animal on earth—travelling from pole to pole each year.  It’s a symbol of how even the smallest creatures, facing big challenges, can cross vast distances and highlights how united we all are.

Why the photo?

This is a photo of me with African penguins—an incredible species I had the chance to see up close at Betty's Bay in Cape Town. Yes, there are penguins in Africa! These penguins are charismatic but also endangered. Predictions show that they could be extinct by 2030. Seeing them was unforgettable, but it was also a stark reminder of how urgently they need protection (as do many other species). Recently, new ‘no-fishing’ zones have been established along parts of the South African coast to help safeguard their future. This 'win' is a powerful example that real change can happen when science, conservation, and communities come together.
