The albatross. They are the most stunning and majestic of bird species, yet face great threats and risk extinction solely due to human activity.
This photo is from October 2021 on Macquarie Island, a UNESCO World Heritage Site where I was lucky enough to be the Station Leader for the Australian Antarctic Division over 2021/22. We managed the island in partnership with the Tasmanian Parks and Wildlife Service and I was lucky enough to participate in the annual census for the Grey Head and Black Brow albatross, mapping and checking all of their nests with the rangers and wildlife biologists. That, and many other experiences over the course of almost 400 days on the island were some of the best experiences of my life.
